The Uninvited a Remake?

Is it just me, or does this trailer for the upcoming film The Uninvited have an aura that is suspiciously similar to the Korean movie A Tale of Two Sisters (one of the most deliciously creepy movies I’ve ever seen)?

I may be getting paranoid, but the fact that The Uninvited is produced by the same people that made The Ring remake  makes me wonder. Also, notice that the older girl in The Uninvited trailer is never shown with anyone but her sister, who recently left a mental institution to live with her father and new stepmother. Also there is a bag and a blood trail. And a house on the lake. Mmmm-hmmm.

I could just be seeing things, but you know. Whatever. Fuck you, Hollywood.

Details on ‘Rashomon’ remake

Our comrade AnaKhouri already gave this a mention, but since Variety has provided some meagre details, I thought I’d jump in on the fun.

YES - the setting is moving from Japan to modern-day America…which I’m rather meh about. I mean, if you were to attempt a remake and set it in ancient Japan, what would be the point of remaking it? Why not just watch the original?

That said…

Action will be moved from ancient Japan to contempo America, where a court must decide the facts about the rape of a woman and the murder of her husband.

…so my question is - how is this different from just about every crappy, grade-z courtroom drama ever made?

‘Seven Samurai’ set for subsequent sodomizing

Seven Samuraiio9 posted a tidbit today that Seven Samurai is receiving a sci-fi facelift from a certain Shane Salerno (no, I’m not familiar with him either, although io9 claims he penned the Shaft remake - which I quite liked actually).

And no, this isn’t the other remake they keep talking about.

I could probably work up a lot of bile over this if I wanted, but it’s probably not worth the effort. Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai has been re-made so many times at this point it seems pointless to get worked up over yet another re-hash, and conversely it’s just as hard to get excited.

The script’s current title isn’t much to write home about, either. Doomsday Protocol? Wasn’t Vin Diesel just in that? I don’t know - and frankly I don’t care. The attention-deficit young adult crowd will probably eat it up like high-powered ritalin, but I’m past the point of caring.

Although it does make me want to go home and watch the original.

Benny Chan to reverse-engineer US thriller ‘Cellular’

Usually the Asian-Hollywood connection runs East-to-West, but Hong Kong director Benny Chan is going against the flow with a planned remake of the 2004 Kim Basinger film Cellular. While the original wasn’t all that great, I can see how it would serve as a template for a decent Hong Kong action flick. Chan has already assembled a Chinese cast that includes Louis Koo and Barbie Hsu.

Hong Kong director Benny Chan, who directed “New Police Story” and “Rob-B-Hood,” says “Connected” improves on “Cellular” by injecting Hong Kong-style action sequences.

“In my movie, I added many elements that Hong Kong action movies do best — human combat, action, flying cars,” Chan told The Associated Press in an interview Tuesday.

The director said he doesn’t mind making a remake.

“What the world lacks most is good stories. If there’s a story that investors think will work in the market and that I like, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with remaking it,” Chan said.
