Okay – one more video before I go to bed. This is a 12-year-old Asian girl nailing King Crimson’s ‘Red’. Nighty-night!

Just so you understand the chain of thought that led me to post this video – Mick Karn, bassist for 80′s synth-pop band Japan, died today…so I went on the usual YouTube clip safari, checking out loads of old Japan videos. Naturally, I started wondering what lead vocalist David Sylvian was up to these days, and lo and behold – I find out that his tune ‘For the Love of Life’ is used in the end-credits sequence for the Monster anime.
So there you go…

My favorite Beatle is George Harrison, and my favorite Harrison-penned Beatles tune is ‘It’s All Too Much’, featured on the Yellow Submarine soundtrack. Seriously, you can keep ‘Yesterday’ and ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ – Harrison’s upbeat LSD trip does it for me every time. Here’s a spiffy version by Yellow Magic Orchestra vocalist Yukihiro Takahashi.

I’m running late getting ready for Thanksgiving dinner, so I don’t have time to say a lot – but I did want to note the untimely passing of musician Peter Christopherson, founding member of industrial pioneers Throbbing Gristle and techno-occult experimentalists Coil. I’m particularly saddened by the latter, as Coil is now and truly gone…partner/collaborator John Balance preceded Christopherson to the grave in 2004.
Rest in peace, Sleazy, and thanks for some of the most beautiful atonality I’ve ever heard.

Okay – two things. I’m a lifelong Smiths fan (well, since the mid-80′s, which is probably a lifetime to most of you)…also, I can personally confirm that Morrissey is kind of a prick (went to see him in the early 90′s and he walked off-stage about two songs into his set because he got offended by something silly).
So, that said – what’s up this?
Morrissey, a vegetarian and animal rights advocate who last year abandoned the stage at the Coachella festival in California because of the smell of cooking meat, described the treatment of animals in China as “absolutely horrific”, referring to recent news stories about animals in Chinese circuses and zoos. He told interviewer Simon Armitage: “Did you see the thing on the news about their treatment of animals and animal welfare? Absolutely horrific. You can’t help but feel that the Chinese are a subspecies.”
I tend to compartmentalize an artists’ work from their personal failings – frankly if I didn’t, there would be precious little art left for me to enjoy. But still – a ‘subspecies’? That’s pretty wrong. Probably won’t keep me from enjoying my Smiths collection but there are some things I’d rather these people keep to themselves.
Ah well – just to make me feel better, here’s a video of The Smiths from before I realized what a douchebag Morrissey is.

MetaFilter recently had a couple of cool links on Asian pop culture topics.
- A discussion of Japanese director Seijun Suzuki (Branded to Kill)
- Visual Kei band X Japan embarks on first-ever US tour
- An awesome gallery of posters using pop culture images (Superman, Marilyn Monroe) to promote manners on public transit

4chan’s latest prank has seemingly obligated horrifying pop sensation Justin Bieber to a tour of North Korea. It seems the Beebs held a Twitter contest for fans to vote on the country the mop-headed terror should visit – predictably, 4chan got their foot in the door and skewed the results towards their venue of choice – namely North Korea. Of course, the chances of Bieber actually setting foot in North Korea are slim-to-none.
I think I speak for most of the civilized world when I say: Mr Kim Jong-Il – your crimes against humanity have been great, but put Justin Bieber in a work detention camp for the rest of his natural life and we’ll call it even-stevens. What say you?

Wired recently posted a quick breakdown of what goes into recording a track in Trent Reznor’s garage studio. I thought it might be worth a link since we mentioned his new project, How To Destroy Angels, in the first episode of the new Yellow Menace Podcast.
On a side note, Ed and I were joking this weekend that Toni Halliday might have been a better choice of vocalist than Reznor’s wife, Filipina singer Mariqueen Maandig. Not to knock Ms. Maanding, but she’s no Toni Halliday. And what do you know? Reznor’s producer on HTDA is none other than Toni Halliday’s husband, Alan Moulder!
Go figure…

I was discussing SLC Punk with friends last night and subsequently have spent a good part of the morning reminiscing about the music of my youth. I was born at just the right time to enjoy the big second wave of punk rock, namely the hardcore punk scene, which was a great refuge for a pissed-off teenager mired in the midst of southwestern Ohio. Saint Ronnie may have declared that it was morning again in America, but I was too busy detonating PVC pipe bombs in the back yard and going to punk shows to give a fuck.
