I’m knee-deep in uploading media to Flickr and YouTube from this week’s Gathering ‘o Geeks, Gen Con Indy, and thought I’d sum up the high points of the convention. Before I get started, though, I should mention that most of the (presentable) photos I took this weekend are now available for your perusal at our Flickr stream. I can’t guarantee satisfaction, even of the vicarious sort, but there should be something in there for everyone (except, perhaps, David Hasselhoff fans). Enjoy.

That said, here’s what I did on my summer vacation:

Gen Con - Day 1 report

First off, I have a confession to make - I basically did jack-nothing related to the site today, insofar as the convention is concerned. Okay, that’s not totally accurate. I did chat a few people up (more on that in a sec) and snagged a Blue Dragon t-shirt from the Konami people.

Okay, now that I’ve confessed my biggest sin, what did I accomplish today?

After gathering a few of my friends and poring over the convention book, we decided that the first task at hand was to nab event tickets for the 10 AM wine-tasting at the Ram, a local brewery/restaurant that has become a popular GenCon hangout over the last few years. Although I am by nature a borderline teetotaler, Centurion felt the need to buy me a pair of lagers to go with the wine - despite the fact that it wasn’t yet lunchtime, and my stomach had nary but a lemon poppy muffin in it. Needless to say, the cheese dip that followed was just what the doctor ordered.

In a state of slight inebriation, we made our way back to the convention floor where we checked out Warhammer Online (verdict: looks cool…very cool), met a few more friends and found Andy Kitkowski, who’s been nose deep in translating the Japanese RPG Tenra Bansho Zero for - well, a while now. We’ve been bugging Andy to do a podcast interview over the last couple of weeks (which, for the record, he agreed to immediately) and geeked out over Japanese RPG’s for the better part of an hour. I really loved the Maid RPG (available now at Gen Con!), which - well, you really have to see it to believe it.

By then it was nearly dinner-time, so we headed out to Buca di Beppo to stuff ourselves with Italian food, and then hot-footed it back to the Hyatt for an 8pm Call of Cthulhu game.

All in all a fun, busy day - not much reportage, but I’ll work that in between now and Sunday.

If you want the proof, here’s a link to our Flickr stream - just a handful now, but I’ll add a slew more as the convention progresses.

Oh - and before I sign off for the night, big ups to AnaKhouri for keeping the home fires burning!
