Episode 3 - A Modest Rebellion: ANDROID AND I

Original Air Date: October 24th, 2002 (Japan)
Spoiler Free Summary:
Why would a handful of obsolete androids commit suicide? A computer virus and a lovesick computer-hacker hold the key to the mystery.
Synopsis:
A series of android suicides prompts Section 9 to investigate the manufacturer. While Aramaki questions the plant manager, Kusanagi and a tachikoma covertly hack into the plant’s database to try and uncover any possible wrongdoings by the manufacturer. As it turns out, all the androids were of the same model, an obsolete product known as the GA07-JL android, dubbed the Jerry by it’s small but loyal fanbase. The Genesis Jerry-model android was so popular because of the ease with which an end-user could modify it to their own specifications, not unlike the Sony AIBO. While the plant manager half-jokingly comments that the Jerry’s have grown despondent because of their obsolete status, Kusanagi discovers that a virus has been inserted into the mainframe, probably by an end-user who had sent his Jerry back to Genesis for refurbishing.

Episode 2 – Runaway Evidence: TESTATION

Original Air Date: October 17th, 2002 (Japan)
Spoiler Free Summary:
The Section 9 team gets more than they bargained for when they try to stop a rogue tachikoma tank from wreaking havoc.
Synopsis:
In a plot-device similar to Mamoru Oshii’s Patlabor 1: The Movie, a heavy-assault Tachikoma tank goes AWOL under the control of an unknown hijacker. After going on a destructive spree at a Kenbishi Industries testing facility, the Tachikoma takes off towards a remote village. Kusanagi briefs her squad at Section 9 HQ, explaining that the Tachikoma’s designer, Kamo Takeshi, died a week before, and that no terrorist organization has claimed credit for the heist. Since the military refuses to get involved (for whatever reason) unless terrorism is involved, Section 9 is called in to stop the tank.

Episode 1 – Public Peace, Section 9

Original Air Date: October 10th, 2002 (Japan)
Spoiler Free Summary:
Major Kusanagi and Section 9 are called in to resolve a hostage crisis at a Geisha house staffed by android geisha. While the crisis is averted, the military thinks there might be more to it…and of course there is.
Synopsis:
After a short action-packed introductory sequence, Major Kusanagi and the rest of Section 9 are called in to resolve a hostage crisis at a Geisha house involving several government officials and a foreign dignitary from the United States. Kusanagi, Batou, and Togusa raid the building, eliminating a trio of android Geishas under the control of a remote operator several blocks away. Batou, Paz, and Borma are able to corner the cybernetically-enhanced suspect (followed closely by a regretful Tachikoma unit), but not before he shorts out his own memory using a device plugged into his neural interface.

Note: this is an updated and expanded version of the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex episode guide which was hosted for several years at our previous site, Destroy-All-Monsters.com. Since the switch to Yellow-Menace.com, the GitS:SAC episode guide has been unavaialable while I devoted my energies toward running the new site through several iterations. Even now we still receive e-mails asking when the guide will return, and I can now say that I have begun pulling the old files out of my archives and will be presenting them in short order.
The current plan is to break the guide down into a new 1 post per episode format which will allow me to clean up, revise, and expand each episode summary. This index will exist as a link to the guide as a whole and as new episodes are added they will be linked here; if you keep this post bookmarked, you will be able to access each episode as i post it. In addition to the expanded synopsis, I will complete the guide through 2nd Gig and Solid State Society. I am also considering new features, such as downloadable commentary tracks, which will enhance your enjoyment of the series.
