Domo’s Daddy Speaks
Here’s a neat little interview with Domo-kun creator Tsuneo Goda, who is probably swimming in pools full of cash thanks to his little brownie-with-a-face.
Goda claims that Domo is not out for world domination, but we know better. His explanation of what Domo rally wants, isn’t even convincing:
Domo doesn’t have plans for world domination as many [...]
Cantonese Opera on CNN
This too-short report on Cantonese opera showed up on CNN today. I’ve been interested in Chinese opera since I saw Farewell My Concubine (though I’ve discovered most opera actors aren’t as attractive as Leslie Cheung). If I remember correctly from when I read Jackie Chan’s autobiography, he also went to opera school. Anyway, it’s all [...]
Double Off-Topic Geek News
Prisoners in Wisconsin are not allowed to play Dungeons & Dragons anymore, in case they form a vicious D&D gang and ravage other prisoners and guards with their spell-casting and attacking the darkness and all.
Oh Noes!
While I agree that the point of prison is punishment, their resoning for takng away D&D is ridiculous. In fact, [...]
Pandora is Far, But China is…Also Pretty Far
I would really like to visit Zhangjiajie, Hunan province, in China. That is the place with all the crazy towers of rock and lots of fog and foliage.
But I don’t want to take the Avatar tour.
You Sold Out Your Mountain?
Zhangjiajie is trying to capitalize on the movie’s popularity in several ways.
The municipal government website has [...]
“…it turns out the Japanese are CRAZY.”
Eugene Lin’s hilarious Ignite speech, about the creation of his softcore porn iPhone app peekaboo. Seriously, this is worth 5 minutes of your life. Not so sure about the app.

20 Weirdest Japanese Films (?)
Weird Asia News has just put up a list of the 20 Weirdest Japanese Films. I am going to comment on the ones I’ve seen (and ut the ones I haven’t seen on my Netflix queue!).
The List
1. Godzilla
I don’t get this. OK, giant dinosar thing stomps Tokyo is kind of weird, but there have been [...]
Tama the Station Cat Gets Promoted
Station Master Tama, the calico cat that I mentioned some time ago, has gotten a promotion to operating officer.
I Can Has Executive Bonus?
She’s a really well-behaved cat. My cat would claw that guy’s eyes out if he tried to put a cape on her. And then she’d eat the feather on the hat.
Japanese people and [...]
Welcome to the Buddhist Bar & Grill
Buddhism, like most religions, is losing members at an alarming pace (I saw a commercial on TV the other day advertising the Catholic Church…they have to make TV ads now?). Unlike the Catholic Church, however, they are getting with the 21st century and have opened a Buddhist bar complete with alcohol and rap music:
Do the [...]
Viva the ‘Nam
Aint-It-Cool-News has a great write-up on a new feature film, Viva the Nam, which is kind of like Robot Chicken’s take on Full Metal Jacket. Apparently the whole thing is a Vietnam flick made with twelve-inch G.I. Joe figures. Seriously. Here’s the trailer.
Those of you lucky enough to live in Austin can check out the [...]
No Mr. Gay China : (
Maybe the bar really wasn’t licensed for a pageant. Maybe the Chinese government really wants to suppress homosexuality. All I know is, if I waited in line to see hot gay Chinese dudes parade across a stage in fabulous costumes, only to be told it was cancelled, I would be pissed off.
Mr. Gay China Shut [...]
Ninja Peke
Ninjas are awesome. Even dogs love ninjas. Like Boo, a Pekingese resident of Kyoto.
Meet Boo
I wonder if he flips out and kills people sometimes?
William S. Burroughs’ manriki-gusari
Manriki-gusari – a traditional ninja weapon – once owned by late Beat author William S. Burroughs. Photographed by Peter Ross. The rest of the set can be seen here. (via Boing Boing)
Designer Doggies in Japan
If you thought American celebrities were stupid about their pets, think about Japan, where everyone with a pet is stupid about it.
Doggie Pampering Goes Too Far
You might have deduced from my other posts that I love animals. I adore animals. But I am not going to carry a dog around with me in a purse. [...]
More Descendants of Darkness…Like I Care
So after about a million years, Yoko Matsushita has finally released another volume of Yami no Matsuei/Descendants of Darkness.
About Damn Time
Although at this point I really no longer care. The eleventh volume was released by Viz back in 2006. I vaguely remember that the characters were off in the spirit world catching shikigami or something, [...]
Completing the trifecta of dead Japanese people – Isamu Tanonaka, voice of Jar Jar Binks
The man who lent his vocal talents to the infamous Jar Jar Binks for the Japanese relases of The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, Isamu Tanonaka, died on January 13th. In fairness to the man, he’s actually more well known for his work on GeGeGe no Kitaro, so let’s remember him that way, [...]
