I’m not usually into this touching, bittersweet, moving stuff, but a million years ago, when I was in school, I read Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr. So when I saw this story on CNN today it really struck me.
Sadako\’s Crane Goes to WTC Memorial
Ironic, that a girl who died from the aftereffects of the atomic bomb has a paper crane delivered to the country that dropped it. But her brother, who donated the crane, doesn’t see it as irony.
“I thought if Sadako’s crane is placed at Ground Zero, it will be very meaningful,” says Masahiro Sasaki, in an education program produced by the tribute center and the Japan Society. “Commonly, in Japan, the crane is regarded as a symbol of peace. But for us, in the Sasaki family, it is the embodiment of Sadako’s life, and it is filled with her wish and hope.”
“I hope by talking about that small wish for peace, the small ripple will become bigger and bigger.”
