That rite of passage for visiting or living in Tokyo, being groped by a perv on the morning commute, may go the way of the dodo thanks to the Tokyo police’s fine work in handing out leaflets and going undercover on the trains to catch the pervs.
It’s almost sad, actually, since in manga and anime being felt up by some gross old man is almost presented as being a quaint custom of the locals.
And no, I didn’t get groped on the train when I was in Japan. But I was only there two weeks, it wasn’t really enough time I guess. But this one middle-aged dude in a suit did stare at me all the way from Shinagawa to where we had to change trains to go to Odaiba.
Considering that "Tokyo trains are notoriously crowded at rush hour," how are they going to enforce this? When they have to literally shove people into the train cars? Hmmm…. well, I guess if the cops undercover, the groped and the offenders can't run away.
