Gen Con Indy preview

While most people think of Gen Con primarily as a game convention (as well they should), Gen Con is also one of the most remarkable gatherings of geekdom on Earth – and that includes a ton of Asian pop culture. If you’re heading to Gen Con Indy next week, here are some things you might want to check out.

Of course most of the Yellow Menace staff will be on hand so if you plan on showing up give us a shout out.

1.) Anime Guest of Honor – Vic Mignogna (Fullmetal Alchemist, Dragonball Z, Macross)

Vic Mignogna, whose extensive resume speaks for itself, will hold Q&A sessions all four days as well as hosting a pair of special events, Music Production and Recording on Thursday evening and Dubbing and Voice acting on Friday.

2.) Anime!

Gen Con Indy has always presented a host of great anime and this year is no exception. Among the selections on tap next week are: Baccano!, Grave of the Fireflies, Last Exile (a personal favorite of yours truly), the samurai epic Shigurui (also worth checking out), and Ouran High School Host Club. As always, the Indiana Anime Club will be on hand to curate the multiple 24-hour anime rooms.

3.) Rebuild of Evangelion 1.0

I could have lumped this in with #2, but really – this deserves a spot of its’ own. The legendary anime Evangelion has been re-imagined and animated with modern techniques – the result is a faithful recreation of the original series first six episodes in theatrical format. Not a bad way to spend Saturday morning.

4.) Asian Film

Like anime, Gen Con Indy is a great place to check out Asian flicks. This years crop includes Frankenstein Conquers the World (aka Frankenstein vs. Baragon), Takashi Miike’s Izo and The Great Yokai War, Sukeban Deka, and the over-the-top masterpiece Tokyo Gore Police.

5.) Hentai Dubbing

Oh yeah, baby! The infamous Hentai Dubbing activity returns. If you can pry yourself away from the gaming table at 11pm Saturday night, Hentai Dubbing offers plenty of opportunity for you to enjoy tentacle rape at its’ best. Naturally, this is an adults-only affair.

This is only scratching the surface – Gen Con is an event so big, you can’t possibly attend everything there is to offer. But rest assured, you won’t be bored.

Gen Con Indy takes place August 13 – 16 at the Indianapolis Convention Center.
