Shapiro Keats LOVES orangutans. They are his favorite animal (I prefer giraffes myself, because thet’re funny looking, but to each their own). So I am always on the lookout for orangutan news.  So of course I came across this heartbreaking/hopeful article about a group in Indonesia who is rehabbing and releasing orangutans who have been beaten, shot, orphaned, or captured and kept as pets.

But the news is still pretty grim:

There are only around 6,500 left in the wild, and some conservationists warn they could be extinct within 12 years.

Funny how the very word ‘orangutan’ is derived from Malay and Indonesian words meaning ‘forest person’, yet they are treated so badly…but then, lots of real people are treated just as badly all over the world.
