Monster in Legos
Some crazy anime/Lego fans have recreated the opening of Monster (one of my favorite anime series, due to be released by Viz this year) in Lego:
Lego Nuts
And for comparison, the original opening (and ending, if you’re inclined to watch it too):
Original
It’s not great, but a fine effort. That opening must have been a bitch to [...]
Kansas gradeschooler Clara Ma names new NASA Mars rover
12-year-old Clara Ma, who attends sixth grade in Lenexa, KS submitted the winning entry to name NASA’s new Mars rover. Her choice? Curiosity.
Here’s the winning essay in question:
Curiosity is an everlasting flame that burns in everyone’s mind. It makes me get out of bed in the morning and wonder what surprises life will throw at [...]
Wired on Christopher Handley lolicon plea
Wired posted a brief analysis of the obscenity charges brought against U.S. manga collector Christopher Handley, who was arrested for trafficking in ‘obscene visual representations of the sexual abuse of children’, aka smutty manga. AnaKhouri has blogged about this in the past, so I won’t gild the lily so-to-speak, but Wired’s piece is worth checking [...]
Domo-kun Invades the 7-11
Where I used to live, there were no 7-11 stores. But where I live now, there are. That’s why I’m thanking God that this fall I can get a Domo-kun Slurpee!
Yum!
Yup, the furry brown monster TV mascot has truly infiltrated American culture.
During the six-week campaign, 7-Eleven stores will offer the Red Apple-flavored Slurpee in an [...]
Kaoru Kurimoto Dead at 56
Kaoru Kurimoto, a popular Japanese author, has passed away at the age of 56.
ANN Article
In a career that spanned just over 30 years, Kurimoto wrote 400 books, including the 126-volume fantasy series The Guin Saga.
I read the first couple books and, quite frankly, thought they were lame. Only the sweet illustrations Yoshitaka Amano did for [...]
Awww…Chris Packham’s dinner is born.
A cute little panda was born in a Thai zoo, which will probably please Panda consumption proponent Chris Packham.
Table for one, then Chris?

Chinese Couch Calls People Bad Names
An outdated Chinese-to-English computer translation program resulted in a rather, um, egregious error on a couch label.
Wow. Just…wow.
The label in question lists the couch’s color as “N—— brown”.
Apparently, when using the program, the couch’s Chinese manufacturer was not aware of the word’s significance. OK, it’s shocking. But honestly, I wouldn’t expect someone from China to [...]

Toilet of Terror
Japanese horror writer Koji Suzuki (he wrote The Ring series and Dark Water) will be publishing a short novel printed on toilet paper.
So Says NPR
I’m not a big Suzuki fan. I liked Dark Water, his collection of short stories, but The Ring was lame. Those are examples of a rare thing: movies that are better [...]

Jury Duty: The Anime
In Japan, the best way to make any kind of educational video is to animate it.
Potty training, cooking, pet care…jury duty.
Jury Duty Anime!
I didn’t know Japan had no juries in their legal system until recently. I’ve never sat on a jury (I wonder if I got called now, if I could get out of it [...]
Manga Review: Nephilim vol. 1
Ah, gender-switching. It seems to be an almost purely Japanese thing; off the top of my head, I can think of at least four manga or anime titles built around the idea, including the legendary Ranma ½, but no Western comics (and only a couple lame comedy movies from the 1980’s). It’s not a [...]
Funimation Poll
Our friends at Funimation want to know what new anime you desire, on DVD, in an English dub! Here is the website where you can vote:
The Poll!
I thought about voting but I am seriously so far behind in my viewing that I don’t know what any of those series even are. I’m still watching stuff [...]

Swine flu outbreak derails Dead Rising 2 E3 appearance
I wasn’t too thrilled with Capcom’s Dead Rising – seriously, Capcom…why do you punish people for playing your games? But I am still looking forward to Dead Rising 2. Unfortunately, whatever PR goodness they had in store for E3 has been squashed by an outbreak of swine flu in Osaka.
“Our Capcom guys are not coming [...]
