Volcanoes + Seawater = Sweet!

Here is a series of photos of an underwater volcano erupting in the Pacific, near the island of T0ngatapu. Awesome! Yet another reason to live in the Pacific: warm weather, nice views, and totally awesome erupting underwater volcanoes! Now if it weren;t for those pesky man-eating Komodo dragons, it would be paradise!

The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny

Since there are about 300 remix videos of this on YouTube I’m going to assume most of you have seen it. But I think it’s funny, so I’m posting it anway. You got a problem with that, buck-o? (Sorry – that’s what my mom used to say to me when I got out of line…and when I didn’t clean my [...]

Singaporean women’s lib group raped by Christian fundies

This is pretty disturbing. A feminist organization in Singapore was infiltrated by Christian terrorists who managed to kick out nearly everyone of note and subsequently installed their own leadership – borg-style. If this was EVE Online I’d be mightily impressed. As it is, I’m just kinda stunned and horrified. Even worse, the group that staged the coup (Church of [...]

Dog the Bounter Hunter comes under fire – gunfire, that is

Racist prick Duane Chapman (aka ‘Dog the Bounty Hunter’) was shot at while pursuing attempted murder suspect Hoang Nguyen in Colorado Springs…which will probably make for better watching than the crap that normally makes it onto his show. I can’t for the life of me understand who enjoys watching Dog and his clan of inbred hicks chase down Mexican bail [...]

N. Korean Ladies Are the Height of Fashion

Even though North Korea is channeling tons of money into building bombs and shit, so much that their people are starving, North Korean women still manage to buy all the latest fashions! …at least, that’s what the official media outlet of the North Korean government says. Bullshit “Korean dress shops in Pyongyang are bustling with customers in the current spring [...]

New and Improved Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is even greater than previously thought. New measurements indiccate that instead of being 5,500 miles long, it is actually 6,000 miles long! (apparently some parts of it were buried under sand and stuff) Article Although, when you’re talking about the largest man-made structure in the entire world, can 500 miles make a difference? That just [...]

Jackie Chan’s spokesman is setting off my bullshit detector…

I really think Jackie Chan should stick to beating the crap out of people and acting goofy, because this whole ‘freedom’ thing is starting to look like a PR nightmare for him. Solon So, the chief executive of Chan’s company JC Group and his main spokesman, said in a phone interview Tuesday the actor was referring to freedom in the entertainment industry [...]

French ‘Dragonball’ fans hold vigil at film screening

We all know that Dragonball: Evolution was pure suck. But nobody knows it more deeply than the French. So leave it to them to mourn the raping of their beloved with a weepy parking-lot vigil in remembrance of what was lost. C’est la vie! (From io9)

Good Books, Part Two, or There’s the Library, People

An Artist of the Floating World (Kazuo Ishiguro) Ishiguro isn’t really a Japanese author; though he was born in Japan his family moved to England when he was a baby, and most of his books are set there. But this one is set in post- WWII Japan. The main character is an old man, pining for the prewar days when [...]

Literary legend J.G. Ballard dead at 78

While we’re on a literary note here at Yellow Menace, I thought it would be appropos (though disheartening) to note the passing of writer J.G. Ballard. Though he may not be a household name here in the States (unless you live in my household, I suppose) many people will recognize Ballard as the author of the controversial novel Crash, which [...]

Furor builds over Jackie Chan’s ‘freedom’ comments

Glad to see I wasn’t the only person perturbed about Jackie Chan’s recent inane comments about China’s need for civil rights (not that I expected to be alone in my disappointment). Chan’s comments drew applause from a predominantly Chinese audience of business leaders, but did not sit well with lawmakers in Taiwan and Hong Kong. “He’s insulted the Chinese people. [...]

Good Books, Part One or “Get Reading, Bitches!”

Some Books About Asia That I Like Farewell, My Concubine (Lillian Lee) Banned in China for many years, this short novel tells of the lifelong friendship between two Peking opera singers. They survive the Cultural Revolution, the destruction of their beloved opera, the tumultuous marriage of one and the unrequited love of the other. The story was made into the [...]

Jackie Chan to Chinese people: “You don’t need freedom.”

I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve ever been as disappointed with Jackie Chan as I was when I read a recent statement he made regarding the Chinese people. “I’m not sure if it’s good to have freedom or not,” Chan said. “I’m really confused now. If you’re too free, you’re like the way Hong Kong is now. It’s [...]

EA pumps Fight Night Round 4 by way of Hatton / Pacquiao fight

I enjoy boxing well enough – boxing video-games, not so much. I’m more of a Virtua Fighter guy. The notion that button mashing makes your fighter tired is a pretty foreign concept to me.
