Off-Topic: Superheroes in my backyard
I used to wonder what it would be like to don the spandex and beat the snot out of wrongdoers in real-life – then I turned 12.
Did I mention I live in Cincinnati? I am sad.
Embedded video from CNN Video
I give it a week before one of these poor saps walks down the wrong alley [...]
MW Trailer! Again!
You’ve probably noticed I’ve been following the live-action movie of Osamu Tezuka’s MW with much enthusiasm. The actual movie doesn’t come out in Japan until July, so I’ll have to wait a while >sob< but at least we finally have a full trailer!
Watch it!
It’s about a guy who, as a child, was exposed to a [...]
South Korean eggheads breed glowing dogs
Why glowing dogs, you ask? Well – it seems that this is really just a proof-of-concept test drive, if you will – proving that genes can be successfully impanted to produce ‘transgenic’ offspring…presumably with traits that are a little more useful than finding your car keys at night.
A South Korean scientist who created glowing cats [...]
Watch Valkyria Chronicles Episode 2
Figured since I was going all video-crazy today I should include this – Episode 2 of Valkyria Chronicles. (Thanks Kotaku!)
Free Berkeley lecture – ‘Introduction to Starcraft and Competitive Gaming’
I’ve been piddling around quite a bit with some of the lectures available at Academic Earth, a website which aggregates Ivy League lectures so poor dumbasses like me can learn a thing or two about political science or physics. This morning I stumbled onto a course entitled Introduction to Starcraft and Competitive Gaming which purports to [...]
Mike Park is the bestest
I’ve got a total man-crush on Mike Park - I can relate to his music in so many ways, being an Asian-American adrift in mainstream ‘white’ culture for most of my childhood and a fellow expat of the 80’s punk scene. I’ve been listening to Mr. Park quite a bit lately (for reasons which are [...]
Maru vs. The Big Box
This is Maru.
Well, it’s Maru’s ass.
Maru is a Japanese cat who is famous on Youtube for being even crazier than most cats.
His latest adventure pits him against a very tall box.
Enjoy.

4chan founder tops TIME list of ‘most influential’ people
…of course, it goes without saying that the list was voted on by users…and was thus nothing more than an open invitation for 4chan to do their thing. One also wonders if the #2 slot (serial sex offender and sometime Malaysian politico Anwar Ibrahim) was also 4chan’s doing…
Yet another stellar example that these ‘lists’ are [...]
Bad, Bad Monks
Buddhist monastaries in Thailand are implementing new guidelines for how their monks behave in public. Apparently, these guys are total boors in public.
Especially the gay ones.
Senior monk Phra Maha Wudhijaya Vajiramedhi told the BBC he would address issues like smoking, drinking alcohol, walking and going to the toilet properly, which are all detailed in the [...]
“Hi Mr. President. Bombs Are Bad.”
Kenji Nakazawa, creator of the semi-autobiographical manga Barefoot Gen and a survivor of the Hiroshima bombing in WWII, has expressed a desire to meet President Obama and present him with a copy of the manga.
That is nice of him.
I think he wants to make sure Obama knows how bad atom-bombing people is.
Although, if Obama was [...]
Yay Lesbians!
I know Musashi hates Stargate, but this might make him change his mind. ^_^
Chinese-American actress Ming Na (I don’t know what else she’s acted in, but she’s pretty) will be playing the show’s first openly gay character!
According to the show’s producers, there is actually another gay character on the show as well, so maybe they [...]
Chinese man victim of nailgun shooting
I don’t know what to say about this incident that can’t be expressed in this photo:
And no, he didn’t survive.
Yellow Menace Theater: Yukio Mishima’s PATRIOTISM
The only film by legendary Japanese author Yukio Mishima. Criterion recently released both this and Paul Schrader’s excellent biopic Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (also worth a viewing if you haven’t seen it – and of course Mishima’s books are highly recommened as well).
Fanfic Wrongness
I’ve run several anime/manga fanfiction contest for the bookstore where I worl. This means I’ve read a lot of bad writing (and some decent writing, but mostly bad). One of my favorites, though, was a case of simple malapropism.
From the context, it was clear the writer meant to say, ‘My friends flocked to me.’
What she [...]
A Conversation About Dragonball Z
Note: Shapiro Keats has been buying all the seasons of Dragonball Z on DVD. For the baby, of course.
Shapiro Keats: How old do you think Gohan (the unborn) should be before we let him watch Dragonball Z?
AnaKhouri: I don’t care. At first he’ll just think, ‘Ooh! Movement! Colors!’ When he’s a little older he’ll just [...]
