The Mighty Orbots – The Wish World

With the new Transformers movie coming out this summer, I’ve been giving some thought to all the ‘giant robot’ shows that comsumed so much of my youth. One that stands out in my memory is a fairly obscure ABC saturday morning series called The Mighty Orbots.

Orbots was unique for several reasons, one of which being that it was a co-production between American and Japanese animation studios. The director – Osamu Dezaki – was a veteran of Astro Boy, Lupin the 3rd, and Space Cobra, and it showed. The series had fantastic animation, especially for its time, and by all rights should have been given more than a one-season lifespan.

Alas, ’twas not to be…Tonka toys intervened, feeling that Orbots infringed on their GoBots property (yes – really…GoBots, the second-string Transformers rejects…) and ABC yanked Orbots after a measly 13 episodes. To date, Orbots has not been released on DVD – and it doesn’t look like it ever will…which is a shame.

However, thanks to YouTube, here’s The Wish World, the second broadcast episode of The Mighty Orbots.
