Rent-a-Family: Not Just in Movies!

A little while ago I reviewed a movie called Noriko\’s Dinner Table, in which a young woman runs a service to rent out familes to lonely people- children, spouses, parents, whatever you want.

Imagine my surprise when I found that this is not, in fact, fiction:

Rent-a-Family

In Japan, you can rent pets, dads, temporary husbands, and college friends.

I can see renting a pet, since in Japan many people cannot have animals. But renting a husband? It’s depressing to think how lonely people in that crowded little country must be to take such extreme measures. The world is hyper-connected thanks to forward leaps in technology, but as a result some people just can’t seem to make real, human relationships work.

And after all, after your hour’s up they go back to work and you’re alone again.
