This piece at UK news outlet Mail On Sunday is actually a study in contrast between what they consider the ‘Best’ Christmas tree and ‘Worst’, but I’m going to avoid that crass value judgment and focus on their choice for ‘best’ – a jewel-encrusted 24k carat gold spike that bears the word ‘Christmas’. It’s not very tree-like if you ask me – I go so far as to say that the 150 million yen artifact looks like what you’d get if you asked Sauron to craft a dildo for Marie Antoinette as a ‘stocking stuffer’ (so to speak).
On the other hand, the so-called ‘worst’ tree captures a peculiar downtrodden charm, in a sad Charles Dickens sort of way. The Japanese tree, which went on display at a posh Osaka jewellery store, just kind of reminds me how much I can’t afford it.
Guess it all depends on how you look at it.
